"Is work-life balance a myth?"

...

Most advice on work-life balance does not talk about the activity disorder that comes with seeking balance.

Examples of this disorder are:

  1. Stress and anxiety from the pressure to meet work and personal tasks without proper management.
  2. Overwhelmed by unrealistic expectations to balance everything at the same time.

As someone who started remote work in college (university), juggling school and work, I sought this balance, and most advice didn't work.

Some sounded generic and unrealistic. It felt like you needed to crack the code of life somehow while working and seeking pleasure.

[If any advice has changed your life, please reply to this email].

But the thing is, the point of balance isn't to force a split between work and pleasure. They go together. Work is part of life; life creates work.

Balance isn't about doing everything in work and pleasure all at once. It's about handling work pressure, being productive, and staying sane.

Something to take home:

Rather than obsessing over work-life balance, focus more on wellness, purpose, and discipline.

You should focus more on:

- doing the right things at the right time

- completing difficult tasks first, then procrastinating or running away

- seeking wellness and purpose in work rather than only profits.
This includes knowing when to shut down your computer to attend a social event or music concert.

Or, saying "no" to invitations that will affect work priorities—at the right time.

💡 It's not linear, and it's not perfect. You can't split them, as they have a bidirectional relationship. Rather, let them flow together with your well-being and life's purpose—to make productivity easier.

This is what is working for me, and I suggest:

• Stop obsessing over work-life balance; they can't be split

• Stop searching everywhere for tips on work-life balance; there's no perfection

• Focus more on priorities - one task at a time

• Do what is right at the right time

• Stop procrastinating

• Have hobbies that help you stay in touch with your inner child outside work hours;

• Seek wellness and purpose in work: Put your well-being first and do works that align with your life purposefully; and if you genuinely hate your job, walk away.

✨ Work-life balance isn't a complete myth. The perfection you may think that comes with it is a myth.

Which of these suggestions do you find most difficult to follow? (Reply to this email with your response; I read and respond to all.)

Recommendations to help you seek wellness and purpose:

Here's what I listened to last week. I saved a lot of notes, which I'll share in the coming newsletters. One I'd love to share is:

📝 Simplify your life instead of jumping from task to task. Focus on one high-value task at a time instead of multitasking. Don't confuse busyness with productivity.
For me, it's intentionally watching a movie or a video course rather than watching and pressing my phone together. Trust me, it's a lot easier to do one at a time than trying to handle the two.

The same thing applies to seeking wellness to find a work-life balance ;)
